CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's soccer team fell to #14 ranked Wake Forest, 2-1, on Tuesday, September 12 at Transamerica Field. The 49ers rallied in the second half to tie the game at one apiece, but a late goal by the Demon Deacons proved to be the clincher.
Freshman Jill Hayes scored her third goal in three games, and fourth total on the season, for Charlotte at the 78:57 mark. Her turnaround strike came off passes from senior Meredith Mayo and freshman Haley Devine, who was seeing action in her first collegiate match. Hayes' four goals on the season currently place her atop the team in goals, one ahead of senior Jill Currie. Sophomore Lindsay Duncan had a shot ricochet off the crossbar earlier in the half in the 48th minute.
Wake Forest opened the scoring when defender Liz McDowell found Joline Charlton, who chipped the ball under the crossbar over the head of 49er keeper Jennifer Howell at 55:46, following a scoreless first half. Rachael Lewis knocked in a loose ball inside the six-yard box following a pass from teammate Katherine Winstead to give the Deacons the lead again with just over seven minutes to play.
The loss drops Charlotte to 3-4, with all four losses coming by one goal. Wake Forest improves to 4-1 on the season. The 49ers will open up Conference USA play this weekend when they host Memphis at 7:00 on Friday and UAB at 1:00 on Sunday.
