CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In a women's soccer match between in-state rivals Charlotte and UNC Greensboro on Saturday, September 9, the Spartans of UNC Greensboro proved victorious over the 49ers, 3-2. After UNC Greensboro jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes of the game, Charlotte was able to rally in the second half with two goals to knot the score at 2-2.
Sophomore defender Mikel Casey scored her first goal of the season at the 48:03 mark, following passes from Tiffany Ross and Jill Currie. Currie later teamed withe Casey to find freshman Jill Hayes standing inside the six-yard box as Hayes knocked the shot past UNC Greensboro goalkeeper Kathryn Clewley to equalize the score with 19:52 remaining. The goal is Hayes' third on the season, matching her for the team lead with Currie.
Early in the match, at 6:28, Spartan Cheryl Stewart picked up a loose ball and drove it past Charlotte keeper Jennifer Howell. Later in the half Megan Bynum of UNC Greensboro found the back of the net after receiving passes from teammates Pa'tra Glavin and Lynsey McLean.
The Spartans scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with only 6:37 remaining. A 49er player was called for a hand ball inside the penalty box setting up the shot. McLean took the shot and placed it over the outstretched arms of Howell.
Charlotte drops to 3-3-0 on the season, while UNC Greensboro improves to 2-2-1. The 49ers will host nationally-ranked and regional foe Wake Forest on Tuesday, September 12, at 7:00 pm at Transamerica Field.
