Ashley Spriggs Named A-10 Player of the Week

Spriggs earned MVP honors after helping the 49ers capture the Hoops For the Cure Tournament title last weekend

Dec. 1, 2008

Charlotte, NC - Charlotte 49ers women's basketball's junior forward Ashley Spriggs was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career after her performance last weekend in the Hoops For the Cure Tournament in Dallas, Texas. Spriggs is the fourth different 49er to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors and the first since Sabrina Gregory earned her third career A-10 Player of the Week award, January 14, 2007.

Spriggs was named MVP of the Hoops For the Cure Tournament in Dallas last weekend (November 28-29), after leading Charlotte to the tournament title with victories over 2008 NCAA Tournament participants Fresno State and host SMU. She recorded her first two career 20-point scoring games against Fresno State and SMU. She connected on two free throws with seven seconds left which proved to be the difference in the 49ers 70-69 win over Fresno State, Friday. Then, she hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer in the 49ers 76-74 win over SMU, Saturday.

For the week, she averaged 16.7 points and seven rebounds in the 49ers three games. She scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Charlotte's other game last week against Wake Forest, Wednesday.

She is third on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game and tied for third on the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per game.

Spriggs and the rest of the 49ers women's basketball team puts their 5-2 record on the line when they battle UNC Asheville on the road, Saturday, December 6 at 2 pm.
