Former 49ers Women's Hoops Stalwart Krystion Obie Joins The Coaching Staff

Obie played an integral role on two conference championship teams as a player with the 49ers

May 7, 2007

Charlotte, NC - Charlotte 49ers women's basketball coach Karen Aston announced the hiring of former 49ers women's basketball standout Krystion Obie as assistant coach. Obie spent this past season as a graduate assistant coach on the 49ers staff after spending four seasons as an integral player on four Charlotte postseason teams.

" I am very excited to add Krystion to our staff," Aston said. "When I came here on my interview, everywhere I turned her name came up in a positive light. I was impressed with her ability to keep the program going during the coaching change. She is a bright young lady who is obviously very driven and as a former student-athlete, she represents everything 49er basketball is about. I look forward to watching her grow into a terrific coach!"

Obie, who was a graduate assistant on the 49ers 2007 WNIT team, served as the interim coach while the program transitioned from Amanda Butler to Aston.

Obie was a part of the most successful class in the program's history. She helped the 49ers win 81 games, claim two league titles (2003: C-USA and 2005: Atlantic 10) and reach postseason play four times.

During her four-year career, she played in 85 games with 56 starts with the 49ers.

Her best season came as a freshman. She started all but one game at center on a team that won 21 games, captured the Conference USA regular season title and earned the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. She averaged 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds that season.

After missing her sophomore season due to a knee injury, she returned to the 49ers lineup in the 2004-05 season and helped the 49ers reach the WNIT.

As a senior in 2005-06, she helped the 49ers capture the Atlantic 10 regular season championship and reach the second round of the WNIT. She saw action in all 30 games with 24 starts.

The High Point, North Carolina native graduated from Charlotte in 2005 with Bachelor's of Arts in Communications and African American Studies. She is currently completing a Masters degree in History at Charlotte.

"This a great opportunity that Coach Aston has given me," Obie said. "Coaching is definitely a prestigious and elite profession and I am honored to have the opportunity to be among and to learn from greats like Coach Aston."
