The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team (17-8, A-10: 8-2) puts their school-record 22-game home winning streak on the line when they host Atlantic 10 co-leader #8 George Washington (21-2, A-10: 10-0) in Halton Arena, Thursday, February 15 at 7 pm.
The 49ers' 22-game home winning streak is currently the fourth longest active streak in the nation. This season, Charlotte has defeated Arkansas State, St. Francis, UNC Greensboro, Charleston Southern, Old Dominion, Houston, Winthrop, Saint Louis, Dayton, Xavier, Duquesne and Fordham at home. Charlotte, who leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring, averages 75.8 points per game at home while holding their 12 home opponents to an average of 57.8 points per game.
The George Washington Colonials enter the game on a 14 game winning streak, which is the sixth longest active streak in the nation. The Colonials will be the third highest ranked team to ever play the 49ers in Halton Arena. Charlotte played Tennessee, when they were ranked #1, in 1991 at home. Then, Charlotte defeated #6 Alabama, 69-67, in overtime, February 18, 1997 in Halton Arena.
Junior Sabrina Gregory continues to lead the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game. She leads the Atlantic 10 with 60 steals and ranks second in the A-10 with 107 assists. Sophomore Danielle Burgin leads the 49ers in rebounding at 7.5 boards per game. She is second on the team in scoring at 11.0 points per game. Sophomore Traci Ray, who recorded a career-high 10 assists at Saint Joseph's last Sunday, ranks among the A-10 leaders with a team-high 53 three-point field goals this season.
This game will mark the second meeting between the two schools. George Washington won the previous meeting between the two teams, 69-65, in last season's final regular season game which enabled the Colonials to tie the 49ers for the 2006 A-10 regular season title.
Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $2 for youth (17-and-under). While Charlotte 49ers students with a valid student ID are admitted free.
