GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sinking nine free throws in the final minute and 22 seconds, UNC Greensboro defeated the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team, 81-70, Monday night at Fleming Gym.
Charlotte (0-2) trailed by as many as 17 in the second half, but battled back in the closing minutes of regulation. Alicia Abernathy's three-pointer with 58 seconds to go pulled Charlotte to within seven at 74-67. UNC Greensboro (2-0) thwarted the 49ers' comeback at the free throw line. Samika Foster hit four straight free throws in the final minute to push the Spartans' lead back to double figures. She finished the game 10-for-10 from the line.
Foster finished with a team-high 20 points to lead the Spartans to the victory. Brianne Dodgen also came up big for UNCG with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Tonika Smith was the leading scorer for the 49ers. She finished with a game-high 21 points, including seven in the final two minutes. Tonya Phifer finished the game with 17 points.
For the game, the Niners were whistled for 27 fouls, compared to 14 for the Spartans. UNC Greensboro attempted 37 free throws compared to 13 for Charlotte.
The 49ers return to action Friday, when they take on St. John's in the opening round of the UNLV Rebel Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev.
