Women's Basketball Tops Austin Peay, 67-47, In Final Non-Conference Game

The 49ers close out the game on a 17-1 run over the final four minutes

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team behind a 17-1 run in the final four minutes and stellar second half defense defeated Austin Peay, 67-47, in Halton Arena in their final non-conference game. With the win, Charlotte improves to 12-2 on the season.

"After the Florida game we really focused on our defense," Charlotte coach Katie Meier said. "I felt that our defense was really strong particularly in the second half. The run to end the game was keyed by our defense. Also, we did not have one turnover during the run."

In the second half, Charlotte limited Austin Peay to 19 points on six field goals and 26% percent shooting from the field.

Andrea Davidson and Pam Brown led all scorers with 13 points apiece. Davidson connected on three three-point field goals in the game. Sakellie Daniels notched her 12th straight double-figure scoring game with 11 points. Tameka Smith added 10 points to the 49ers effort.

Austin Peay enjoyed the lead in the early part of the game after scoring the game's first four points. Charlotte then answered by scoring eight of the next 12 points tying the score, 8-8, just over four minutes into the game.

Then, Austin Peay went on an 11-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 19-10, at 11:01 mark of the half. The run was keyed by a couple of jump shots by Carden Cobb.

Charlotte tied the game, 23-23, with a 13-4 run over the next seven minutes. Davidson connected on two of her three-point field goals during the run.

The 49ers scored seven of the final 12 points of the half to take a 30-28 halftime lead.

In the early part of the second half, Charlotte increased their lead to seven points, 40-33, at the 11:38 mark. Then, Austin Peay would go on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes tying the game at 40-40 on Cassandra Peek's three-pointer.

 

 

The 49ers edged ahead for good on Brown's layup at the 8:26 mark giving the 49ers a 42-40 lead.

Charlotte increased their lead to 50-44 when Austin Peay's Ashley Haynes connected on two free throws with 4:33 left in the game.

Then, Charlotte closed out the game with a 17-1 run over the final four plus minutes of the game. Daniels connected on back-to-back three-pointers to start the run. The 49ers did not have a turnover during the run and forced five Austin Peay turnovers.

Charlotte opens Conference USA play with home games against Saint Louis and Memphis. The 49ers host Saint Louis, Friday, January 7 in their Conference USA opener at 7 pm. Then, Charlotte hosts Memphis, Sunday, January 9 at 1 pm.
