The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team, who are a perfect 8-0 in the regular season against Atlantic 10 competition over the past two seasons, are the top seed in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, April 5-7, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. This is the second straight season that the 49ers have been the top seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The 49ers begin their quest for the Atlantic 10 Championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when they battle the winner of the Saint Joseph's-Richmond match, Thursday, April 5 at 5 pm. If the 49ers win that match, they advance to the semifinals, Friday, April 6 at 2 pm. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at 11 am.
The 49ers enter the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 14-8 record, which is tied for the most wins in Coach Jim Boykin's 14 seasons at Charlotte. Charlotte earned the top seed in the tournament after posting a perfect 4-0 mark against A-10 competition this season. The 49ers defeated Temple, 5-0, in the VCU Invitational, January 20. Then, they defeated St. Bonaventure, 6-1, at the Virginia Tech Invitational, January 27. Charlotte then defeated George Washington, 5-2, at home, February 24. Then, the 49ers defeated Richmond, the defending A-10 Tournament champs, 7-0, at home on March 18.
The 49ers are led by the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year junior Roy Sichel, who is ranked #80 in the latest ITA national singles rankings. Sichel has recorded 26 singles wins this season, which is tied for the fourth highest single-season victories total in school history. Seniors Darren Mansell (14 wins) and Dorian Host (11 wins) and sophomores Brad Clinard (12 wins) and Ricky Cuellar (11 wins) join Sichel as 49ers with double-figure singles wins.
Last season, Charlotte reached the championship match of the A-10 Tournament with victories over George Washington and Temple.
