Chapel Hill, NC - Sophomore Roy Sichel captured the Flight A singles title as the Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team competed at the UNC Fall Invitational this past weekend.
Sichel captured his first collegiate title with four singles victories over the weekend. He defeated High Point's Jack Notton, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round. Then, he defeated Radford's James Lloyd, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, he defeated North Carolina's Sebastian Guejman in three hard fought sets, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. He dropped the first set to Radford's Martin Sayer in the finals, 7-6, before Sayer had to retire due to injury.
In Flight B action, senior Stuart Lynas defeated Campbell's Gorjup, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round. Then, he lost to Radford's Brandon Johnson, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. He then lost to North Carolina's David Stone in the backdraw, 6-2, 6-2.
In other Flight B action, junior Ryan Johnson defeated Navy's Adrian Lai, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round. Then, he lost to North Carolina's Karl Wishart, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the backdraw, he lost to North Carolina's Aly Mandour, 6-2, 6-3. He then defeated East Carolina's Ricardo Barone, 7-5, 6-0, in his final match.
In Flight C action, sophomore Felix Bernhoerster lost to North Carolina's Sandeep Daiya, 6-0, 6-3, in his first match. Then, he lost to East Carolina's Britton Steele, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9, in the backdraw.
In other Flight C action, sophomore Jorge Guzman lost to High Point's Perren, 7-6, 6-1, in his first match. He then lost to Campbell's Marc Sifre, 6-1, 6-3, in the backdraw. He lost to Wofford's Scott Collins, 6-4, 6-0, in his final match.
In Flight D action, senior Jonathan Vencatachellum defeated Davidson's Jay Chitty, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, in his first match. Then, he lost to North Carolina's Tristan Heinrich, 6-3, 7-6, in the quarterfinals. He defeated Davidson's Scott Myers, 6-0, 6-1, in the backdraw. Then, he lost to Richmond's Chris Louis, 6-2, 6-4, in his final match.

In Flight E action, senior Zvi Lantsberg defeated Radford's Tyler Early, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals. He then defeated Campbell's Artoym Starkov, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, he was leading High Point's Henrick Almstrom, 6-4, 2-3, before having to retire. He defeated Davidson's Joe Cheaney, 6-1, 6-1, in his final match.
In other Flight E action, senior Jean-Michel Werk defeated Navy's Kyle Jones, 6-1, 6-3, in his first match. The, he lost to eventual flight champion Richmond's Mark Berajawala, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals.
In Flight A doubles action, Johnson and Lynas defeated High Point's Brooke and Perren, 8-6, in their first match. Then, they defeated Campbell's Gorjup and Wilpotte, 8-5, to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, they defeated North Carolina's Guejman and Porter, 8-2, to reach the finals. In the finals, they lost to North Carolina's Stone and Gullan, 8-2.
In other Flight A doubles action, Host and Sichel defeated Davidson's Bermeo and Cheaney, 8-6, to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, they lost to North Carolina's Stone and Gullan, 8-1, in the semifinals.
In Flight B doubles action, Berhnoerster and Vencatachellum defeated Navy's Kai and Lai, 8-4, in their first match. Then, they lost to North Carolina's Daiya and Heinrich, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.
In Flight C doubles action, Guzman and Werk defeated Davidson's Chitty and Myers, 8-4. Then, they lost to North Carolina's Plyler and Wishart, 8-1. In their final match, they lost to Navy's James and Jones, 9-8.
The 49ers return to action with the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma, October 3-9.
