Charlotte, N.C. - Despite some close results, Charlotte was blanked by Furman 7-0 at home Thursday afternoon in men's tennis action. It was only the second time the young 49ers did not score a point in the match. Charlotte falls to 8-12 on the season, while Furman improves to 5-10.
"Our freshmen got a taste of some tough tennis today," said Niners head coach Jim Boykin. "Michael Anders stood up to the test as well as anyone. Our freshmen have done so well in singles this year, but had a new experience today. They had a good attitude today and fought hard. Furman was just too good today and they get all of the credit."
Charlotte was able to get a doubles win when brothers Felix Bernhoerster and Moritz Bernhoerster outpaced their opponents at number-two in an 8-4 defeat. The pair is 8-6 overall playing together, mostly at number-two singles.
Freshman Michael Anders and Chris Motes played the match of the day, each winning 6-4 in the first two sets and playing a grueling third-set superset, which lasted to 11-9 in Motes' favor.
Charlotte will host Boston College this Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Phillips Tennis Complex.
