Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis team lost its first home match of the season, 4-0 to the Winthrop Eagles. Rain started to drift into campus and the last three singles matches went unfinished. Charlotte falls to 4-7, while the Eagles improve to 3-2.
"We are disappointed," said Niners coach Jim Boykin. "We battled hard, but we have to play the big points better. Give Winthrop credit. They took care of their opportunities and played better in this bad weather."
The Niners and Eagles faced adverse conditions, with biting wind causing problems for both teams prior to winter storms moving through the area. The Eagles were able to manage to earn the doubles point, winning at numbers one and two, with Charlotte capturing the number-three match. Brad Clinard and Chris Huynh won 8-1 over Marcin Majchrzak and Jose Pardo.
Winthrop took three singles matches, enough to claim the team win, before the rains came. Rodrigo Santos won at number-one, Vinicius Bortolatto won a second-set tiebreak to claim the number-two singles win, and Majchrzak win in straight sets at number-five to finish the team victory.
Charlotte heads to the coast to take on UNC Wilmington at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
