Elon, N.C. - The No. 51 Elon Phoenix outlasted the Charlotte 49ers in men's tennis action Saturday. Charlotte drops to 4-6 on the season, ending a two-match win streak.

In singles action, Elon found wins with No. 72 Damon Gooch (over Felix Bernhoerster 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1), Oscar Podlewski (over Ricky Cuellar 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2), Mason Schermerhorn (over Brad Clinard 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3) and Philip Nemec (over Moritz Bernhoerster 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 5). The 49ers earned wins by Michael Anders (over Alberto Rojas 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4) and Chris Huynh (over Cody Stauffer-MacDowell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6). Anders improved 7-2 on the season, while Huynh jumped to 5-4 in singles.

"We played well against a strong Elon team," said head coach Jim Boykin. "I am proud of our guys for playing hard tennis. We may have played harder today than we did at home on Friday against College of Charleston. We're still learning and picking up information about ourselves and I'm proud of that."

The Phoenix posted the doubles point when Gooch and Schermerhorn overcame Jesse Hutchinson and Jeff Archer 8-6 at No. 1 and Rojas and Helpingstine toppled Clinard and Huynh 8-3 at No. 3. Charlotte won at No. 2 where Felix and Moritz Bernhoerster stopped Nemec and Podlewski 8-5. The Bernhoersters improved to 5-0 in doubles play since being paired together a couple of weeks ago.

Charlotte will host Winthrop Thursday at the D.L. Phillips Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
