St. Louis, MO - Junior midfielder Kent Long scored his fourth goal of the season as the Charlotte 49ers (11-6-1, A-10: 5-3-1) lost at Atlantic 10 leader #12 Saint Louis (12-2-3, A-10: 8-1), 5-1, in the final regular-season game for both teams. Charlotte finished the regular-season fourth in the Atlantic 10 and will begin play in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the University of Dayton, Thursday, November 15.
"We started the game well," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We applied good pressure and had several good scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the game. For the first part of the first half, we were the better team. Then, we gave up a goal and then the flood gates opened."
The 49ers scored the game's first goal when Long bended a corner kick into the net in the 12th minute.
Saint Louis tied the score, 1-1, when Scott Wisniewski scored on a Brandon Barklage assist in the 32nd minute.
The Billikens took the lead for good when Dado Hamzagic scored off assists from Barklage and Brian Grazier, in the 38th minute. Hamzagic scored his second goal of the game off a Kyle Patterson assist in the 43rd minute.
Saint Louis' Jimmy Holmes scored the Billikens fourth goal off a Patterson assist in the 44th minute.
Barklage made the final score, 5-1, when he scored on a corner kick in the 63rd minute,
The 49ers finished the game with five shots. Long paced the 49ers attack with two shots.
Charlotte's 11 wins this season are the most by the 49ers since an 11 wins season in 2004.
