Woollard Keys Charlotte to 2-0 Shutout of Temple

49ers Tally Seventh Shutout of Season

Nov. 2, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Behind two goals from senior forward Tom Woollard, marking his sixth and seventh goals of the season, the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team rallied past Temple (4-9-2; A-10 4-2-1) Friday evening at Transamerica Field. The win, moving Charlotte to 10-5-1, 4-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, marks the seventh shutout of the season for sophomore goalkeeper David Martin.

"I feel we defended solidly and passed the ball around well," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "When we got control of the ball in the midfield, we made some lovely decisions."

"I was pleased with our discipline."

Woollard put the 49ers on the board early, scoring his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute with a bicycle kick and flick off a pass from freshman midfielder Will Shull.

Twenty minutes later, Woollard tallied his second goal of the night from a corner kick by sophomore forward Adam Gross and pass from junior forward Chris Salvaggione.

"[Woollard] finished the ball exceptionally well tonight," Gunn said. With his efforts, Woollard moves into fourth in the conference in goals scored and first in goals scored per game.

Late in the second half, three red cards were assessed after a fight broke in Charlotte's offensive third, taking Salvaggione, Mackenson Altidor and Temple goalkeeper Tony Pratico out of the their next contests.

Charlotte enjoyed a 10-6 advantage in shots, 7-3 in shots on goal.

The 49ers return to the pitch Sunday, honoring the four Charlotte seniors (defender Paul Begue, goalkeeper Tim Seibert, defender Graham Tatters and Woollard) before taking on Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
