Richmond, Va. - Tallying his career-high second goal of the season, sophomore forward Kevin Fox scored the game-winning goal in the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team victory at conference foe Richmond (4-10-1; A-10: 1-4-0) Sunday afternoon. With the win, the 49ers move to 9-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while sophomore goalkeeper David Martin garners his sixth shutout of the 2007 campaign.
"In the first half, Richmond played very well, putting us under quite a bit of pressure," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "In that time, our back four managed to defend very well and keep us in the game. In the second half, we definitely got a little bit more aggressive and assertive."
After a scoreless first half, Fox's goal came in the 66th minute of regulation, hitting the back of the net from 30 yards out off an assist from senior forward Tom Woollard.
"It was a tremendous goal with an emphatic finish," Gunn said.
Just 13 minutes later, junior forward Chris Salvaggione blasted in a shot for his eighth goal of the season, finding a deflected cross from freshman Andres Cuero collected by freshman forward Will Shull.
Salvaggione is now tied for first in the A-10 in season goals.
Despite entering the break down on shots 12-3, Charlotte enjoyed an 11-6 shot advantage in the second period.
"I think we're playing very well and getting on a roll," senior defender Paul Begue said. "We gave ourselves a bit of a cushion by winning these two this weekend, but we've got a lot of work ahead of us."
