Washington, DC - The Charlotte 49ers (8-5-1, A-10: 2-2-1) behind goals from Kent Long, Will Shull and Andres Cuero and stout defense led by goalkeeper David Martin recorded their second straight Atlantic 10 shutout victory with a 3-0 win at George Washington (7-6-1, A-10: 1-2-1).
"It was a very hard fought Atlantic 10 game played in torrential rain," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "The first half was a really physical battle with neither team able to score. Then, in the second half we took control of the game and played great soccer. I am also very pleased with our defensive effort with a shutout. We did a tremendous job on defense as we limited George Washington to only a couple good looks at the goal."
The 49ers scored the game's first goal when Long put his third goal of the season into the back of the net from 18-yards out off a Shull assist at the 61:19 mark of the match.
Shull quickly added to the 49ers lead when he chipped the ball over George Washington goalkeeper Matt Scheer into the goal off a Tom Woollard assist just 26 seconds later at the 61:45 mark of the match. Shull's goal was his third of the season.
Andres Cuero closed out the scoring when he beat several George Washington defenders and scored on a shot from 12-yards out off Woollard's second assist of the game at the 80:34 mark of the match. Cuero's goal was the first of his career.
