Charlotte, N.C. - Behind strong performances by sophomore midfielder Luke Exley and sophomore forward Adam Gross, the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (6-5-1; A-10: 0-2-1) settled for a 1-1 tie with Rhode Island (4-6-2; A-10: 2-0-1) Friday evening at Transamerica Field.
"In the first half, Rhode Island was unbelievable, so we tried to cling on to the game," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "In the second half, they didn't look like the same team, allowing us to pull through. I could not have been prouder."
"[Exley and Gross] took over the game, working hard to get the ball and making good decisions once they won it. They truly were the engine room of the team."
Rhode Island blew open the scoring late in the second half, as Lukasz Tumicz sent a shot into the back of the net off a Kevin Hamill assist at the 35:13 mark.
Senior defender Graham Tatters nearly scored a goal in the last second of the first half, but failed to do so as the shot was just a second late.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Exley tallied his fourth goal of the season, sinking a shot into the right corner of the net off a Rams block.
With the score even, Charlotte garnered two additional scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, as a free kick was ruled ineligible and a shot by junior midfielder Kent Long hit the crossbar in the last seconds of play.
