#20 49ers Fall On The Road At La Salle

Chris Salvaggione scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season

Oct. 12, 2008

Box Score

Philadelphia, PA - The 20th ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (9-3, A-10: 1-1) despite first half goals from Chris Salvaggione and Adam Gross lost on the road at Atlantic 10 foe La Salle, 3-2.

"We played pretty good soccer for the majority of the game," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We had several other great scoring chances in the first half that would have put the game away. But you have to give La Salle credit they kept playing hard and they were able to come back and win the game."

The 49ers scored the game's first goal when Luke Exley crossed the ball from the right side of the field to Salvaggione who headed the ball into the back of the net in the 24th minute. Salvaggione's goal was his tenth of the season which is the most goals scored by a 49er since Adam Ruud scored 11 goals in 2004.

Charlotte quickly added another goal when Isaac Cowles was fouled in the box which led to a penalty kick. Gross buried the penalty kick into the back of the net in the 28th minute. Gross' goal was his fourth of the season.

Evan James, Salvaggione and Gross all had great scoring chances over the remaining fifteen minutes of the half but either their shots went wide or hit the post.

La Salle cut Charlotte's lead in half when Jim Guntle put the ball into the back of the net off a 49ers defensive misclear in the 51st minute.

Then, La Salle tied the score, 2-2, when Guntle shot the ball off the post that was rebounded by Tom Kalpokas, who put the rebounded shot into the net in the 83rd minute.

La Salle's Daniel Heavey scored the game-winning goal off a Colin Whalen assist in the 87th minute.

La Salle finished the game with a 15-14 advantage in shots. Gross, James and Salvaggione each had four shots apiece for the 49ers..

Charlotte returns to Transamerica Field where they battle Dayton and Xavier in their A-10 home opening weekend, October 17-19. The 49ers host Dayton in their A-10 home opener, Friday, October 17 at 7 pm.
