49ers Fall On The Road At Duquesne In A-10 Opener

Freshman Will Shull scored his second goal of the season in the game

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

Pittsburgh, PA - The Charlotte 49ers (6-4-0, A-10: 0-1-0) saw their three-game winning streak end with a hard fought 2-1 loss at Duquesne (3-4-3, A-10: 1-0-0) in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.

"Today's game was just a ugly game of soccer," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "The ball spent a great deal of time in the air which makes for ugly soccer. However, Duquesne deserved to win the game they made it very difficult for us today."

Duquesne scored the game's first goal when Matt Groves scored off assists from Travis Mackenzie and Alex Trujillo in the 15th minute.

Then, Groves made the score, 2-0, with his second goal of the game off assists from Trujillo and Pat Flinn in the 17th minute.

The 49ers made the final score, 2-1, when Will Shull scored his second goal of the season when he blasted the ball into the back of the net off a rebound off a Duquesne defender in the 82nd minute.

Charlotte finished the game with 13 shots. Graham Tatters, Adam Gross, Chris Salvaggione, Paul Begue and Andres Cuero each tallied two shots apiece for the 49ers.

The 49ers continue their A-10 season opening road trip at St. Bonaventure, Sunday, October 14 at 12 pm.
