Bronx, NY - The 20th ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team (9-2, A-10: 1-0) behind second half goals from Evan James and Chris Salvaggione rallied for a 2-1 road win at Fordham (4-5-1, A-10: 0-1) in the A-10 opener for both teams. Charlotte has now won six of their last seven Atlantic 10 regular season games.
"It was an incredible victory," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "Fordham played well in the first half and took a deserved 1-0 lead at the half. Our play was a bit sluggish in the first half but we made a commitment at halftime to go on the attack. We put Fordham under a great deal of pressure in the second half and were able to score two goals. This was a good conference road win."
Fordham scored the game's first goal when Matt Courtenay headed in a John Pardini pass in the 26th minute.
Charlotte had a great chance to tie the score in the closing minutes of the first half when a Salvaggione shot beat Fordham's goalkeeper Ryan Meara but the ball hit off the post.
It took the 49ers almost 30 minutes to tie the score but they finally did when James rose above the Fordham defense and headed in a pass from Ryan Swaim in the 55th minute. James' goal was his second of the week and his fourth of the season.
For the second time this season, the 49ers scored the game-winning goal with under a minute left in regulation. Salvaggione scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season when he blasted a shot into the back of the net from 14 yards out off a Kent Long assist with 89:02 on the clock. Salvaggione has now scored 17 goals in just 31 games as a 49er and his nine goals is the most by a 49er in a season since Adam Ruud scored 11 goals in 2004.
