College Park, MD - Freshman Evan James scored his third goal of the season but #10 Maryland rallied with two unanswered goals for a 2-1 overtime victory over the 20th ranked Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team. The 49ers saw their six game unbeaten streak end as their record fell to 8-2 on the season.
"I could not be more proud of our team and how they played in one college soccer's toughest environments tonight," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "Our defense was very resolute. We showed that we could compete against one of the nation's top teams. However, despite a great performance by our team we are disappointed in the final result. Now after a very successful pre-conference season, our focus turns to the Atlantic 10. We are shifting our attention to try to get a win in our A-10 opener at Fordham on Friday."
The 49ers took the lead when Josh Norwood passed to Chris Salvaggione who found a streaking James in the middle of the field. James got by a couple of Maryland defenders and blasted the game's first goal into the back of the net in the 47th minute.
The 49ers kept the pressure on Maryland for the next 10 minutes. Charlotte had another great scoring chance when Adam Gross whipped the ball across the front of the goal. Isaac Caughran made a run at Gross' pass near the left post but he just missed getting to the ball.
However, Maryland tied the score when Jeremy Hall scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.
Maryland's Casey Townsend scored the game-winning goal off a Hall assist in the 96th minute.
