Orlando, FL - Chris Salvaggione scored two goals and assisted on the other goal as the Charlotte 49ers (6-3) blanked Central Florida, 3-0, for their third straight shutout in their final non-conference game.
"It was a good team win and a wonderful way to end the non-conference portion of our schedule with a win on the road against a good Central Florida team," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We played really good soccer at the beginning of the game. We created some good scoring chances and were able to capitalize on several of them. Then, Central Florida put us under a ton of pressure trying to get back into the game. Our defense was very resilient and stopped every Central Florida scoring opportunity. Our shutout was really about grit and determination."
The 49ers quickly gained control of the game when Kent Long beat a Central Florida defender and passed the ball across the face of the goal to Salvaggione. Salvaggione then blasted his first goal of the game in the back of the net from 10 yards out just over a minute into the game.
Charlotte added their second goal when Tom Woollard scored his fourth goal of the season off a Salvaggione assist in the 28th minute.
The 49ers third goal came when Woollard corralled the ball and found Will Shull in front of the goal. Shull held the ball until he could find a streaking Salvaggione who put the ball in the back of the net from eight yards out in the 32nd minute. Salvaggione's two goals give him a team-leading five goals on the season. He also leads the team with six assists and 16 points.
Central Florida finished the game with a 23-9 advantage in shots. Salvaggione recorded a game-high five shots.
The 49ers defense posted their third straight shutout and the tenth of sophomore goalkeeper David Martin's career. Martin finished the game with five saves.
