Cincinnati - The Charlotte men's soccer rallied to defeat Cincinnati 2-1 in double overtime. Charlotte's Mira Mupier scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute into the second overtime.
"Soccer is such a strange game," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "It looked like we were going to lose the match when Cincinnati had a penalty kick in the first overtime. But our goalkeeper Lucas Mackanos came up big for us. Mira was exceptional for us all night. Even before he scored the goal he was creating a lot of problems up front for Cincinnati. This was a great team effort and a gut-wrenching win for our team."
Cincinnati scored the game's first goal when Shane Curran connected on a scoring shot in front of Charlotte's goal off a cross from Jeremiah Gallegos at the fourteen minute mark.
Charlotte tied the match at 1-1 when Chris Wargin connected on a scoring shot in front of the goal off a cross from Juan Munoz-Airey at the 54 minute mark of the match.
Then, 20 minutes into the second half Charlotte was forced to play a man down when Munoz-Airey was issued a red card.
Then, Cincinnati had a serious scoring chance when Charlotte was called for a foul in the goalie box which gave Cincinnati at penalty kick at the 92:48 mark of the match. Cincinnati's Scott Lyons took the penalty kick but Charlotte goalkeeper Lucas Mackanos made a diving save to his right of Lyons' shot to keep the match tied at 1-1.
Charlotte scored the game-winning goal when Mupier headed in a ball over Cincinnati goalkeeper Derek Moore off an assist from Joel Wisdo at the 106 minute mark of the match.
