CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte men's soccer team defeated Memphis in double overtime 4-3 in the first game of the Charlotte/Puma Classic.
Charlotte improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Conference USA. While, Memphis fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA.
Memphis scored first when Sean Fraser connected on a shot off an assist from Graham Gibbs with just under fourteen minutes gone in the match.
Charlotte tied the match at 1-1 when Tim Flavin scored off assists from Stephen Miller and Chris Wargin at the 27:20 mark of the match.
Charlotte took a 2-1 lead when Miller scored off assists from David Costa and Page Sincler with just over five minutes left in the first half.
Memphis tied the score at 2-2 when Tommy White scored off an assist from Michael Shipman with about fourteen minutes gone in the second half.
Charlotte retook a 3-2 when Rob Evitts slipped a shot past Memphis goalkeeper Clark Talley off assists from David McGill and Bryan Barber at the 67:43 mark of the match.
Memphis tied the match about five minutes later when Tommy White scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Corey Shumate.
In the second sudden-victory overtime period Juan Munoz-Airey sent a shot past Memphis keeper Talley with just about eight and half minutes left in the second overtime. Munoz-Airey goal was set up by assists from David McGill and Rob Evitts.
In the second game of the Charlotte/Puma Classic, Central Florida and Virginia Tech battled to a 3-3 double overtime tie.
The Charlotte/Puma Classic will conclude Sunday, September 24. Central Florida will face Memphis in the first game at 12 pm. Then, the Charlotte women's team will host Houston at 2:30 pm. The Charlotte men's team will face Virginia Tech at 5 pm in the final match of the Classic. All three matches will be played at Charlotte's Transamerica Field.
