Charlotte, N.C. - Behind six saves from sophomore goalkeeper David Martin, the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team stifled Presbyterian (1-7-0) in two overtimes Saturday evening at Transamerica Field. With the win, Charlotte moves to 4-3-0 on the season.
"Pulling out a victory in tonight's game has to feel good for the players," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "But, from a soccer standpoint, it wasn't our best game. While we strive to play quickly, tonight we played standing still."
"In the end, David [Martin] won us the game and kept us in the game when we weren't playing as well."
The contest's lone goal came early in the second overtime period when junior midfielder Kent Long threaded the ball through the Presbyterian defense after a long-ball assist from senior defender Paul Begue and short help from senior defender Graham Tatters.
The 49ers enjoyed an 11-9 shot advantage, led by four shots from sophomore midfielder Luke Exley and two from senior forward Tom Woollard.
Before returning to Transamerica Field on Friday, October 19 to face conference foe Rhode Island, Charlotte will venture on a long road trip in which they take on Appalachian State, Central Florida, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.
