Charlotte, NC - Behind a thrilling offensive attack, the Charlotte 49ers men' soccer team stomped cross-county foe Davidson 5-1 Saturday evening at Transamerica Field, moving to 7-0-1 in home openers since 2000 and 17-9-6 in the Davidson series. With the win, Charlotte holds a 3-2-0 record.
"It's a great way to start off at home," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We definitely set the bar high for ourselves and have no choice but to keep it up."
After Davidson's Whitey Bolan was issued a red card in front of the Wildcat goal, Charlotte scored late in the second half off a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Luke Exley, marking his third goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, senior forward Tom Woollard connected with the back of the net, threading the ball through defenders off assists from freshman midfielder Will Shull and junior forward Chris Salvaggione.
Salvaggione rounded out the scoring in the first half less than a minute later with an unassisted goal, allowing the 49ers to enter the break with a 3-0 lead.
At the 59 minute mark, Davidson was assessed its second red card of the evening, forcing the Wildcats to play two men down for the remainder of regulation.
Charlotte immediately exploited the situation, as junior midfielder Kent Long notched his first season goal off an assist from freshman forward Andres Cuero.

Charlotte enjoyed a 20-12 shot advantage, with Shull and Will anchoring the roster with five shots apiece.
The 49ers retake the field Wednesday against in-state foe UNC Greensboro.
