Charleston, SC - The Charlotte 49ers saw their two-game winning streak end with a 2-0 loss on the road to the College of Charleston in the championship game of the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Tournament. The 49ers return to action when they host cross-county rival Davidson in their home opener at Transamerica Field, Saturday, September 15 at 7 pm.
"We began the game by putting a great deal of pressure on Charleston," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "Then, Charleston worked their way back into the game toward the end of the first half. The second half we came out played great soccer. Charleston scored the game's first goal on a very good finish about halfway through the second half. Then, they scored again about ten minutes later which took a lot out of us. At the beginning of each half we looked like the better team. They just scored the game's first goal which is always crucial."
The game's first goal came in the 66th minute when Charleston's Jake Helmig headed the ball into the back of the net from seven yards out off an assist from Grant Guthrie.
Then, Charleston's Kareem Yearwood concluded the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, off a double assist by Guthrie and Sean Bateau in the 76th minute.
College of Charleston outshot the 49ers 8-6. Chris Salvaggione paced the 49ers with three shots. While Will Shull tallied two shots for the 49ers.
Charlotte had two very good scoring chances but Charleston's goalkeeper Corbin Waller stopped shots by Salvaggione and Shull in the 78th minute.
