Charleston, SC - Goals from Luke Exley, Will Shull and Chris Salvaggione gave the Charlotte 49ers a 3-2 win over Elon in a back and forth battle at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Tournament at the College of Charleston.
"Tonight's game was a fantastic contest between two good teams," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "I am very proud of our team in that we showed the resiliency to win this game. We had the drive to score the game-winning goal in the final five minutes. The game went back and forth and I am so proud of the boys that all their hard work paid off."
Elon took an early lead when Brett Paschall scored on an unassisted goal off a shot from ten yards out in the 22nd minute.
The 49ers tied the score on a great individual effort from Exley. Salvaggione passed the ball to Exley just outside the box. Then, Exley dribbled through several Elon defenders in the box and blasted the ball into the back of the net from ten yards out in the 36th minute.
"We came out in the second half and put tremendous pressure on Elon," Gunn said.
Charlotte would score twice in the second half giving the 49ers the victory.
Charlotte took their first lead of the game when Shull scored a brilliant goal. Exley crossed the ball to Graham Tatters who headed the ball to Shull who blasted a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out in the 51st minute.
Elon tied the score, 2-2, when Justin Wyatt scored off an Alex Barake assist in the 72nd minute.
The 49ers regained the lead for good on another dramatic goal from Salvaggione. Exley took a free kick and kicked the ball toward the 49ers goal. Salvaggione rushed onto the ball and headed the game-winner into the back of the next at the 84:07 mark of the match.
