CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team blanked Conference USA foe East Carolina, 1-0, in their home opener. This was the 49ers seventh home opening win in Coach John Tart's nine seasons at Charlotte.
With the win, the 49ers improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Conference USA. While, East Carolina fell to 1-1-1 on the season and 0-1 in Conference USA.
"We played a solid match today," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "Every game is Conference USA is tough and this one was no different. Our goal was a great score by Mira Mupier. The key to the goal is that we got Mira the ball in a dangerous area."
The 49ers finally broke the scoreless tie when John Nabers sent a pass over the box to Michael Rose who headed the ball to Mupier. Mupier then corralled Rose's header and sent a shot into the lower right corner of the goal at the 88:36 mark of the match.
This was not the only scoring chance that both teams had in the match. But several great saves by Charlotte goalkeeper Lucas Mackanos and East Carolina goalkeeper Brian Pope were able to thwart those scoring chances.
Mackanos collected six saves en route to posting his 12th career shutout.
The 49ers return to action next weekend at the USF/Ameri-Suites Invitational, September 12-14. The 49ers face host Conference USA rival South Florida in their first game of the Invitational, Friday, September 12 at 8 p.m.
