COLUMBIA, SC - Charlotte behind David McGill's game winning goal defeated #22 South Carolina 2-1 on the road.
The game began after a 45 minute rain and lightning delay, which did not dampen Charlotte's efforts as they improved to 2-0 on the season while South Carolina fell to 1-1.
The 49ers took the early lead at the 30:16 mark of the first half when Chris Wargin scored his second goal of the season when he chipped in an eight-yard shot off the double assist from David Pedreschi and Rob Evitts.
South Carolina tied the score at one when Jack Cummings scored at the 33:28 mark.
The 49ers took the lead for good at the 71:23 mark when David McGill connected on a header in front of the goal mouth off Evitts' second assist of the game. McGill's shot from about ten yards out went over the outstretched hands of South Carolina goalkeeper Henry Ring.
Charlotte's defense held off South Carolina for the final 18 minutes to record their first victory over South Carolina since 1996.
Charlotte returns home to host crosstown rival Davidson, Thursday, September 7 at 7 pm.
