CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's soccer team defeated Gardner-Webb 4-3 in dramatic fashion in double overtime when Juan Munoz-Airey scored his third goal of the game with 49 seconds left in the game. This game was the regular season opener for both teams.

Munoz-Airey scored the game-winning goal as he beat Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Rio Oros off an assist from Chris Wargin with 49 seconds left in the double overtime.

"We showed a lot of character in tonight's game," Charlotte coach John Tart said. "I was not particularly pleased with our intensity level at the beginning of the match. However, Juan Munoz-Airey was a major bright spot for us tonight."

Munoz-Airey scored his first goal just over 20 minutes into the match when he scored off a Shane Carew assist giving Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb tied the game at 1-1 when Brian Wentzel scored off assists from Darnell Carroll and Sergio Lozano just over eight minutes later.

Then, Gardner-Webb would score with just under three minutes left in the first half to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Carroll scored an unassisted goal off a Charlotte defensive deflection.

Charlotte tied the game at 2-2 when Carew connected on a scoring shot from 35 yards at the sixty minute mark of the match.

However, Gardner-Webb regained the lead at 3-2 when Wentzel scored off an indirect kick just outside the penalty box just about a minute later.

Then, Munoz-Airey would tie the game when he scored his second goal off beautiful crosses from George Shepard and Mira Mupier at the seventy-two minute mark.

Charlotte returns to action when they host East Carolina in their Conference USA opener, Sunday, September 2 at 2 pm.
