Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers head golf coach Ben Hannan has announced the signing of Russell Killough (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) to a national letter of intent to play golf with the 49ers next season.
Killough, considered the top prep golfer in North Carolina, won the Mecklenburg County Amateur, this year, finished second in the North Carolina Open, and won the IJGT International Junior Tour Championship in Greensboro, N.C. At last year's North Carolina High School state championships, Killough finished second, breaking the all-time scoring record with an opening round 65.
Most recently, he has been ranked 20th among the nation's juniors, boasting a 56-0 win-loss record in national competition with a stroke rating of 71.56.
"Being regarded as the best player in the state, having Russell choose our program says a lot about where we are headed," said Hannan. "We are very excited. He is a very talented player who will fit in nicely with the young talent we have here. With Russell aboard our future is very exciting."
The 49ers current roster, which has no seniors, includes all-Conference USA performer Mike Shamp, former AJGA all-America Clint Deibert, John Samaha, who was ranked 23rd among the nation's juniors last year, and the team's top performer this past fall, Sam McFall, who posted a 72.6 stroke average in the fall.
