Former 49er Jeff Curl Begins Final Stage of PGA Q-School

Curl to Compete For PGA Tour Card, Dec. 3-8, at PGA West

Dec. 2, 2008

La Quinta, Ca. - Former Charlotte 49ers golfer Jeff Curl is among approximately 156 participants, ready to compete in this week's final stage of the 2008 National Qualifying tournament at PGA West - Nicklaus Tournament Course and PGA West TPC Stadium Course in hopes of earning a 2009 PGA TOUR Card. The National Qualifying tournament, commonly known as Q-School, consists of four stages of events to pare the list of hopefuls. Individuals must advance through a pre-qualification, first and second stage to the six-round, 108-hole final stage.

The top 25 finishers, including ties, receive privileges to play on the following year's PGA Tour. Remaining finishers in the top 75, plus ties, receive full privileges on the Nationwide Tour.

Curl shot a -9, 279 in the second stage qualifier at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., Nov. 12-15, to join a four-way tie for 17th-place, earning one of the final spots to advance to this week's final stage. Among those that failed to advance from the Georgia qualifier: former PGA pros Billy Andrade and Len Mattiace.

Curl had shot a 10-under par 278 to tie for fifth, overall, and easily advance through the first stage at St. John's Golf and Country Club, Oct. 21-24.

Curl played for the 49ers from 1997-00 and was part of a pair of Conference USA Runner-up teams in 1998 and 1999. A first team all-Conference USA selection in 2000, Curl was also the 49ers 2000 team MVP.

Curl is set to tee off in the first round at 9:00 a.m. PT, on hole #1 of the TPC Stadium Course with Derek Lamely and David Berganio, Jr. A native of Ellington, Conn., Curl now calls Charlotte home.
