Nagy Leads All-America Classic After Two Rounds

Charlotte Junior Atop Leaderboard of Exclusive Individual Event

Nov. 24, 2008

El Paso, Texas - The best collegiate golfers in the country converged on El Paso Country Club for the 34th Annual Western Refining all-America Classic and after the first two rounds Charlotte 49ers junior Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance) sits atop the leaderboard.

Nagy, a two-time GCAA all-America, carded a four-under par, 138, in the first two rounds at the par-71, 6,842-yard El Paso Country Club. Nagy held the first round lead after posting a four-under par 67 and then shot even-par, 71, in round two to maintain a one-stroke lead over Kyle Stanley of Clemson (-3, 139).

Nagy finished tied for ninth at the event, last year. This year, he won the Titleist Long Drive Skills Contest. Last year, he won the PING Putting Contest. He is one of only two players (Chris Nallen, Arizona, 2003) in the history of the prestigious event to win both skills competitions.

"He's got a great mindset for the tournament," said 49ers head coach Jamie Green. "They treat the players tremendously. It's a great reward for the effort that was put in in becoming an all-America. He's having a great time and is really in the mindset to perform well."

The event features such other standout golfers as Jorge Campillo of Indiana, Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State, Erik Flores, of UCLA, Zack Sucher, of UAB, Russell Henley and Adam Mitchell, of Georgia, Chesson Hadley, of Georgia Tech and Billy Horschel, of Florida.

Nagy's first round 67 was the best round of the day, matched by Flores in round two. Only nine of the event's 27 players carded rounds in the 60's and only five players, including Nagy, posted two rounds of par or better.

The third and final round will be played Tuesday. The tournament, hosted by the Sun Bowl Association.

Throughout the years, many Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers' Association of America and on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Matt Kuchar (1999), Davis Love III (1984), Chris Nallen (2003), Jerry Pate (1974), Nicholas Thompson (2004) and Tiger Woods (1995).
