CHARLOTTE GOLF MAINTAINS #1 RANKING

Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat Rankings Both Tab Niners Number One

NEW VIDEO FROM GolfweekTV.com

Oct. 5, 2007

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers golf team, idle this past week, maintainned its number one ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking system. In addition, Golfstat published its first ranking for the year and also tabbed Charlotte as the number one team in the country.

The Charlotte 49ers golf team has placed first in both of its season-opening events, capturing the Scenic City Invitational by six strokes and the PING/Golfweek Preview by four strokes. The victory at the PING/Golfweek Preview catapaulted the 49ers to number one in the nation, the highest ranking ever by a 49ers athletic team, in part because the 15-team field included six top 10 teams and 13 top 25 squads. The 49ers toppled runner-up Oklahoma State by four strokes at the event and defeated then-#1 Alabama by 14 strokes.

The PING/Golfweek Preview was played at the site of the 2008 NCAA Championships while the Scenic City Invitational was played at the site of the 2008 NCAA East Regional. The 49ers placed third at the NCAA National Championships last year, and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three years.

Charlotte is back in action at The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif., Oct. 15-16. The best chance for fans to catch a glimpse of the 49ers this fall is at the Callaway National Match Play tournament in Greensboro, Ga., Oct. 28-30.

The golf season runs throughout the academic year and although the NCAA Golf Championships and conference championships are held in the spring semester, competitions in the fall count towards NCAA Tournament selection.

Golf tournaments vary in size, with usually between 15-20 competing teams, and consist of three 18-hole rounds. Each team takes a five-man lineup to the event and the top four scores of each round make up the team's total score for that round. The worst individual score of each round is dropped. At the end of three rounds, the team's three single-round totals are added together to make up the team's final score.

According to Golfstat, Charlotte leads the country with an adjusted individual round scoring average of 70.89. The average "dropped" score for the 49ers is also the lowest in the nation at 75.56. No other team in the top 10 team has a dropped score average lower than 76.75.

According to the latest Sagarin/Golfweek Individual Rankings, Charlotte has two players in the nation's top 10 and three in the top 50. Stefan Wiedergruen, who won the PING/GolfWeek Preview and tied for second at the Scenic City Invitational, is ranked third in the country. Jonas Enander Hedin, who placed tied for second at the PING/Golfweek Preview and tied for sixth at the Scenic City Invitational, is seventh while Corey Nagy, who won the Scenic City Invitational and placed 41st at the PING/Golfweek Preview, is ranked 42nd.

The number one ranking for the 49ers golf team is the highest for any program in Charlotte 49ers history. The 49ers men's soccer team was ranked #2 in the country in the ISAA Coaches Poll, Oct. 19, 1992. Charlotte's third-place showing at the 2007 NCAA Championships was also a program-best finish, matching the 1996 men's soccer team which reached the National Semifinals. The 1977 men's basketball team placed fourth at the Final Four.

Charlotte, which rose as high 14 in the final 2006-07 Golfstat national rankings, began the 2007-08 season ranked 10th in the NIKE/GolfWorld Coaches poll. They moved up to #9 in the coaches poll after the season-opening win at the Scenic City Invite, which also landed the 49ers at #5 in the Golfweek rankings. Charlotte moved to #1 following the win at the PING/Golfweek Preview. GolfWorld has not released rankings since the completion of the PING/Golfweek Preview.
