Niners Ninth After First Round of Topy Cup

Nagy Leads Charlotte at -1, 71

Tokyo, Japan - The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers golf team shot +10, 298 to land in ninth-place after the first round of the 2008 Topy Cup in Japan. The 49ers, one of four american teams playing alongside six Japanese universities were led by junior preseason all-America Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.). Nagy shot an opening round of one-under-par 71 to place tied for sixth individually.

The Topy Cup is a three-round 54-hole event.

Tohoku Fukushi University and Lamar share the first-round lead at -3, 285.

Shinpei Lijima of Meiji University and Lamar's Leroux Ferreira share the first-round individual lead at -3, 69.

Senior Stefan Wiedergruen (Wablingen, Germany/Salier Gymansium) shot a first round of +2, 74 for the 49ers, followed by sophomore Will Golden (Auburn, Ala./Auburn H.S.) who carded a +3, 75. Senior David Rawluk (Dublin, Ireland) and junior Blake Stark (Canton, Ga.) both shot a +6, 78.

Charlotte is ranked 13th in the nation in the preseason Golf World/GCAA Coaches poll and 19th in the preseason Golfweek poll. The 49ers finished tied for 8th at the 2008 NCAA Championship, their second straighth top 10 finish at the NCAA Championship.
