Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers golf team, which opens the 2008-09 season Tuesday at the Topy Cup in Japan, is ranked 19th in Golfweek's pre-season poll. Junior Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.) was named Third Team Pre-Season all-America by the publication.
Charlotte is also ranked 13th in the pre-season GCAA/Golf World Coaches poll.
The 49ers join Georgia, Stanford and UCLA as the only four teams in the country that have posted back-to-back top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Charlotte tied for 3rd at the 2007 NCAA Championship and tied for 8th at the 2008 NCAA Championship. In addition, only Charlotte, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Southern Cal, Stanford and UCLA were ranked in the top 10 of each final 2007-08 poll.
Charlotte spent time as the consensus #1 team in the country, last season, a first for any 49ers sports program. Charlotte returns two starters from last season's squad: senior Stefan Wiedergruen and junior Corey Nagy.
Nagy, a two-time honorable mention all-America and former GCAA Freshman all-America, was named to Golfweek's pre-season all-America third team. Nagy is the 49ers top returner. He posted a 72.14 scoring average, last year and placed 16th, individually, at the NCAA Championship. He finished the 2008 season ranked 46th/47th (Golfweek/Golfstat) among collegiate golfers.
