Mesa, Arizona - Charlotte 49ers former golf star Trevor Murphy (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), shot an 11-under par 60 to climb into the lead in the second round in the Gateway Tour Desert Series' 9th event at Longbow and Alta Mesa CC. Murphy stands at 15-under par after two rounds and holds a one stroke lead entering the final round.
Murphy was a member of the 49ers historic 2008 graduating class. That class became the first in school history to advance to four straight NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by a 3rd-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championship. They won three Atlantic 10 Championships and placed a tied for 8th at the NCAA Championship in 2008.
During his senior year, Murphy received wide acclaim when he became the first 49er player to qualify for a PGA event while he was still in school when he qualified to compete as an amatuer in the PGA Wachovia Championship, held in Charlotte.
At Longbow Golf Club, Murphy started Thursday's 2nd round at 4-under par after his first round, 68 at Alta Mesa. Ten birdies, an eagle, and a bogey later, Murphy had posted an 11-under par round of 60 to take a one stroke lead over Warren Schutte (66/63-129) into Friday's final round.
Murphy has been a consistent performer in the Desert Summer Series leading into this week, having made 7/7 cuts for an amassment of $13,962.50, and he's even showed a propensity to go low after shooting an 8-under par, 64 at Desert Mountain in Desert Summer Series #5.
His T5 finish that week is his only top 10 of the Summer Series thus far.
