Georgia's Adam Mitchell won the last three holes to eliminate 4th-seeded Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.), 2up, in the first round of match play at the 108th USGA US Amateur at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Wednesday.
Nagy had qualified tied for third out of 315 participants at 3-under par through two stroke-play rounds to earn the fourth seed in the 64-player bracket.
The 49ers two-time all-America led his match with Mitchell, 2up through 10 holes, but bogeys on the 11th and 16th holes squared the match heading into the final two holes. Mitchell parred both holes while Nagy bogeyed both, giving Mitchell the victory.
Nagy had also reached match play at the 2008 US Public Links Amateur, this summer. He reached the quarterfinals (Final 8) of that event before being eliminated.
Nagy and the rest of the 49ers, who have posted back-to-back top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championship, will begin the 2008-09 collegiate season, Sept. 9-11 at the prestigious Topy Cup in Tokyo, Japan.
