Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers two-time all-America Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.) shot a three-under par 67 in the second and final round of stroke play at the 108th Annual USGA US Amateur at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Tuesday. He finished tied for third at -3 after two rounds. The top 64 players advance to Wednesday's bracketed match play.
"I pretty much enjoyed the round from my first shot to the last shot and every shot in between," said Nagy, who birdied three of the first four holes on his back nine. "I had a lot of fun, stayed patient, hit it very well and made a lot of great putts."
Nagy, who started on the back nine of Pinehurst #2, chipped in for birdie on hole #1 (his 10th hole), landed an approach about three-feet from the cup for a birdie on hole #3 and knocked his third shot out of the bunker to about two feet on the par 5 hole #4 for another birdie.
"Then I made a bunch of crucial par putts on the way in," Nagy added.
Match play begins Wednesday and will also be played on Pinehurst #2.
"Its a different format," Nagy noted. "It gives us a little variety and is a lot different than stroke play. I really enjoy the one-on-one (style). I like the change from what we usually play"
"Corey really had a good game plan out there today," said 49ers head coach Jamie Green, a three-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. "He executed wonderfully. He was intelligent, athletic and remained calm throughout the day -- just the way you want to be in this setting. You can tell he'll be in really great shape headed into match play the way he's approaching the golf course and I know he's excited about that."
Nagy was named GCAA Honorable Mention all-America in 2007 and 2008 after helping Charlotte to back-to-back top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. In 2007, Nagy was named to the five-man Freshman all-America team after helping Charlotte to a program-best 3rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2008, Nagy finished 16th, individually at the NCAA Championships to lead Charlotte to a tie for eighth place.
