Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers rising sophomore Will Golden (Auburn, Ala.) posted four victories in the Alabama Match Play State Championship before being eliminated in the semifinals.
Golden fell to eventual champion Glenn Northcutt of Dothan, Ala., 2 & 1, in the semifinals, Saturday.
Earlier in the tournament, Golden defeated Jay Harris, of Killen, 3 & 2, in the first round and Robbie Cotten, of Brewton, 1up, to reach the round of 16. In the final 16, Golden topped Vic Kyatt of Hoover 4 & 2 and then defeated Garrett Burgess of Anniston, 2 & 1 to reach the semifinals.
Golden, a two-time all-state performer for four-time 6A state champion Auburn High in Alabama, saw limited action for the senior-led 49ers as a freshman in 2007-08.
He is one of five 49ers that will be heading to Japan for the season-opening Topy Cup, Sept. 9-11, in Tokyo.
