Nagy Advances Through PGA Wyndham Championship Pre-Qualifier

Nagy Birdies Three Straight En Route to a 68

Aug. 7, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers two-time all-America Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance) shot a three-under par 68 in Thursday's pre-qualifier to advance to Monday's qualifier for next week's PGA Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

"I can't wait to play Monday," said Nagy, a rising junior who qualified for the 2008 US Amateur earlier in the week. "I had a great time all day. I stayed patient and didn't force anything."

Nagy carded five birdies on his round, including three straight on holes 3, 4 and 5.

Nagy is looking to become the second 49er this season to qualify for a PGA event. In May, senior Trevor Murphy qualified for the PGA Wachovia Championship in Charlotte.

"I'm sure it will be a blast," Nagy said of Monday's round. "I am going to try to keep having fun."

Nagy has been instrumental in the 49ers back-to-back Top 10 NCAA finishes in his first two seasons with the 49ers. A two-time all-America, Nagy owns two of the 49ers top four all-time single-season scoring averages. He was the 2007 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and the 2008 Atlantic 10 individual runner-up. He finished tied for 16th at the 2008 NCAA Championships to lead Charlotte to a tie for 8th-place. The 49ers tied for 3rd in 2007, Nagy's freshman year. Those two finishes are the best ever by the 49ers golf team and the first time in school history that a 49ers team has finished in the top 10 in two straight NCAA Championships.
