Nagy Qualifies for US Amateur

Rising Junior Shoots 4-Under in Final Round

Aug. 5, 2008

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Charlotte 49ers rising junior Corey Nagy (Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.) qualified for the 2008 US Amateur by parring the first playoff hole in the final round of sectional qualifying at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, NC on Tuesday, August 5, 2008.

Nagy finished in a four-way tie for third place. The top five finishers would advance to the US Amateur, requiring a playoff between those four for the final three spots. Nagy, Austin Cody of Charleston, SC and George Gandranata of Indonesia parred the first hole while Jakin Fox of Statesville, NC bogeyed. Fox is the first alternate.

"I'm pretty pumped to make it," said Nagy, who shot a four-under round of 66 to get into the playoff. "It's the biggest (amateur) tournament and always has the best competition. Any USGA event is perfectly run. This one is a little more special with it at Pinehurst. I've played Pinehurst many times before and really enjoy the course. To have qualifying here in Kannapolis and the US Am in Pinehurst just works out too well. I hadn't made it before and said this year I've got to make it. It's at Pinehurst -- it would be great to make it. I finally made it to the US Am. It's great. I love match play, it's a great format and I can't wait to get there."

Nagy made three straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15 but needed a 10-foot come-backer to save par on 18 to make the playoff. He finished qualifying with a two-day total of -5, 135.

"I made the 10-foot par putt to get into the playoff," Nagy said. "That was a really big putt. At the time I didn't know it but that was big."

Nagy will be making his first US Am appearance but he has competed twice in the US Amateur Public Links Championship. In 2007 he lost to eventual winner Colt Knost in the semifinals. This summer he lost to eventual winner Jack Newman, in 24 holes, in the quarterfinals.

Fellow 49er Stefan Wiedergruen shot two-under par 68 to finish at -2, 138, missing the palyoff by three strokes. Wiedergruen and Nagy were paired in the same threesome, today.

"We played together today which was awesome," added Nagy. Stefan had a very good round and we sort of fed of each other. Today was fun. Very cool."

Anthony Tsiolkas of Winston-Salem, NC and Crawford Reeves of Greenville, SC, joined Cody, Gandranata and Nagy to claim the five qualifying spots.

The U.S. Amateur Championship will be played at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, NC, August 18-24.
