Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers rising junior Corey Nagy continues to excel during a busy summer. Nagy, a two-time all-America, won this weekend's 3rd Annual Carolina Am Golf Championship at Northstone Country Club of Huntersville.
With the victory, Nagy automatically qualifies for Thursday's pre-qualifier for next week's PGA Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. Nagy must advance through the pre-qualifier and then through Monday's qualifier to gain a spot in the PGA event.
Nagy posted a two-day total of six-under par 139 to win by four strokes over Spencer Percy of Hickory. The Carolina Am is a two day 36 hole stroke play golf tournament for amateurs only. To qualify amateurs must have a 6.3 handicap index or less. The event is hosted annually by Northstone Country Club of Huntersville.
"This is an unusually outstanding opportunity for an amateur golfer to have a chance to be in a PGA Tournament. We will all be pulling for Corey," said Carolina Am Tournament Director Charles Humphreys.
Charlotte 49ers fans will remember that earlier this season, 49er Trevor Murphy qualified to compete in the PGA Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. Murphy, who has now graduated, competed as an amateur and played admirably in the marquee event, shooting three-over par to miss the cut by two strokes.
Nagy, who reached the quarterfinals (round of eight) of match play at the 2008 US Public Links Championship, is competing Monday and Tuesday in the US Amateur qualifier at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
