Charlotte 49ers rising junior Corey Nagy won two matches, Thursday to advance to Friday's quarterfinals at the 83rd Annual U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek G.C. in Aurora, Colo. Nagy defeated Patrick Lundy, 4&2 in the round of 32 and then eliminated Grant Leaver, 2&1 to reach the final eight.
Nagy, who reached the semifinals of the event in 2007, faces Jack Newman, of Des Moines, Iowa in the quarterfinals, Friday morning. The winner will advance to play either Carson Hammock or Randall Hutchison in the semifinals, Friday afternoon.
After placing tied for 4th of 155 participants in the qualifying stroke play, Nagy was seeded 5th in the 64-player bracket. The tournament field included such names as Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler, Florida's Billy Horschel and San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg. Nagy is the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
The championship will be played Saturday. Among other accolades, the winner of the event regularly receives an invitation to the Masters.
