Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers' golfers continue to enjoy a strong summer that has been highlighted by impressive performances at some of the nation's most prestigious amateur events.
In addition, individuals continue to thrive in a variety of competitions.
Most recently, rising senior Trevor Murphy (St. Johnsbury, Vt.; Burke Ski Academy), who won the Vermont Open earlier this summer, captured his third straight title in the Vermont Amateur. In addition, rising junior Stefan Wiedergruen (Waiblingen, Germany; Salier Gymnasium) won the Luxemburg Invitational and Andrew DiBitetto (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) won the RDGA John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial Championship in Rochester, NY.
Murphy won the Vermont Amateur to give himself the state's double crown: The Vermont Open and the Vermont Amateur. He won the Vermont Am by 13 strokes to easily snag his third straight title in the event. Wiedergruen added international flair to the 49ers summer successes by capturing the Luxemburg Invitational while DiBitetto followed up a trip to the round of 16 at the North & South Amateur with a one-stroke victory at Rochester's coveted Ryan Memorial Championship. DiBitetto birdied 18 to overcome a course record-tying round of seven-under par, 65 by John Kircher in the final round to snag the victory.
