Murphy Fires One-Under Par 71 at Wachovia

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers senior golfer Trevor Murphy, competing as an amateur, shot a one-under par 71 in the first round of the PGA Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club, Thursday. Murphy will tee off at 8:35 a.m. Friday, in the second round. Murphy is paired with Chez Reavie (E, 72) and Dustin Johnson (+6, 78).
A senior on the 49ers fifth-ranked golf team, Murphy, the only amateur in the field, is just four strokes off the lead, held by David Toms at -5, 67. He is tied for 24th overall in the 156-player field.
Murphy qualified for the event in a playoff Tuesday, defeating tour veteran Paul Claxton on the second playoff hole, to secure one of the final four spots. Murphy and Claxton had tied for fourth in Monday's 85-player qualifier, leading to Tuesday's playoff.
Murphy, a world class junior skier from St. Johnsbury, Vermont, turned to golf after a knee injury forced him off the slopes. He has been a four-year starter on the 49ers golf team, helping the program's meteoric rise in college golf.
Charlotte has been to the Division I NCAA Tournament in each of Murphy's three seasons, including last year's historic third-place finish at the NCAA Championships -- matching the best NCAA finish ever by a 49ers athletic team.
This year, the 49ers won their first four stroke-play events to become the nation's consensus #1-ranked golf team, a first for any 49ers athletic program. Charlotte is currently ranked 5th (Golfstat) and 6th (Golfweek and Golf World/Coaches' poll) in the three major college rankings.
Surprsingly, Murphy has the fifth-best stroke average on the Niners team at 73.3, this season.
The 49ers are competing this weekend at the Atlantic 10 Championships, where they are two-time defending champions. The A-10 Championships get underway Friday morning. Murphy has been replaced in the 49ers lineup by freshman Will Golden.
