Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte sophomore Stefan Wiedergruen (Waiblingen, Germany) won the individual crown at the seventh annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament Tuesday at the Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation. Wiedergruen, competing as an individual, carded a three-under-par 69 Tuesday to finish with a two-day score of -2, 142 (73-69), four strokes better than the rest of the field.
Catawba College shot a 300 Tuesday to rally for the team title Catawba shot 307-300 to finish with a 607 team total, edging first-day leader North Greenville University by five strokes (607-612).
The best round Tuesday belonged to Winston-Salem State University senior Joshua Vogler (Mount Airy, N.C.), who shot a 68. Vogler's huge day Tuesday allowed him to move up the charts to second place. He shot 146 (78-68) for the Hargett event.
Charlotte had four players competing as individuals in the event. Red-shirt freshman Blake Stark tied for 11th at 152 (78-74). Sophomore David Rawluk was tied for 15th at 155 (78-77) and senior Ty Lefler finished tied for 40th at 166 (81-85).
Wiedergruen recorded four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey Tuesday to take home the Hargett hardware.
Wiedergruen and Vogler were joined on the all-tournament team by Catawba College sophomore Derek Paschal (Summerfield, N.C.), Mars Hill College sophomore Nate Lockey (Brantford, Ontario) and Lincoln Memorial University freshman Charlie Hawes (Surrey, England). Wingate sophomore Shane Dyer (Watertown, N.Y.) missed a spot on the honor squad by one stroke, as he shot 151 (74-77) to share sixth place with four other student-athletes.
Catawba's Paschal placed third with a 149 (76-73), while Lockey and Hawes shared fourth place with two-day totals of 150 each. Lockey recorded 74-76, while Hawes notched 77-73.
On the team leader board, Belmont Abbey College's B team placed third with a 630. Lincoln Memorial University was fourth with a 631. Brevard College claimed the fifth position with a 634.
The Wingate University Gold team (A team) was sixth with a 635. The Wingate Blue team (B team) finished seventh with a 641. The eighth through 10th slots were occupied by Mars Hill College (649), Tri-County (S.C.) Technical College (654) and Winston-Salem State (777).
Sixty-six golfers competed in the seventh annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate men's golf tournament. The Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation hosted the event for the first time in 2007.
