Charlotte, N.C. - Shooting two-under par 142 at the rain-shortened Birkdale Intercollegiate, junior Mike Shamp lowered his spring stroke average to 71.4 through five rounds of golf.
The 49ers (22-30-1 this spring), have participated in three events this spring and Shamp has shot par or better in four of the five rounds. In the season-opening CSU Kick-Off, Shamp shot 71-74 at the par 71 Coosaw Creek Country Club. With just one round played at the LSU Spring Invitational, due to inclement weather, Shamp carded a two-under par 70. Most recently, at the Birkdale Collegiate, Shamp posted rounds of par 72 and two-under 70 to place tied for 10th individually.
In three seasons, Shamp, a first-team all-C-USA player last year, owns a 74.7 stroke average. His overall stroke average this year, which includes four events from the fall, is 72.5.
Scott McNeil (75.0 this spring) and John Samaha (76.8 this spring) are two first-year players that have been giving head coach Ben Hannan solid results. Junior Michael Jolly has been playing the best golf of his career, averaging 77.6 strokes over five rounds, this spring, besting his career stroke average by 3.5 strokes.
The 49ers placed tied for eighth of 18 teams at the CSU Kick-Off and 11th at the one-round LSU Spring Invitational. At Birkdale, the 49ers finished 14th of 18 teams. In two of the last three rounds, however, the 49ers have carded team scores of +5, 293 (at LSU) and +2, 290 (final round at Birkdale).
