Green Accepts Head Coaching Position at Duke

Led Charlotte to Back-to-Back Top 10 NCAA Finishes

Jan. 9, 2009

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose has announced that golf coach Jamie Green has resigned to accept the head coaching position at Duke. Green, who was in his sixth year with the 49ers program, led Charlotte to back-to-back top 10 finishes in the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008. In his first five years, Green led Charlotte to the NCAA Tournament four times and won three straight Atlantic 10 Championships.

Assistant coach Adam Pry, a finalist for the 2008 Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award, will serve as 49ers interim head coach during the 2009 spring campaign.

"I am grateful to Jamie for providing the necessary leadership that propelled our golf program into national prominence," said Rose. "We wish him well at Duke. We are committed to provide the same type of quality leadership as we move forward. We are fortunate to be able to place our current team in Adam's capable hands."

Green led the 49ers to their first-ever NCAA Regional in 2005. In 2006, the 49ers advanced through regionals to the NCAA Finals, placing 22nd. In 2007, the 49ers matched the school's highest-ever NCAA finish in any sport when they tied for 3rd at the NCAA Championship. In the 2007-08 season, the 49ers spent time as the nation's consensus #1-ranked program, a first for any 49ers sport. Charlotte tied for 8th at the 2008 NCAA Championship. Charlotte won A-10 titles in each of the last three years.

"This is easily the hardest coaching decision I've ever made," said Green, who guided the 49ers to 17 tournament titles over the past four and a half years. "The opportunity that (Director of Athletics) Judy Rose, (Senior Associate A.D.) Darin Spease, then-Chancellor (James) Woodward and now (Phil) Dubois have given me and my family are more than I ever dreamed of. Our golf program has been given every resource and every opportunity to compete at the highest level and I am just so fortunate that we found the players that could attain that. The current players and the 49er graduates have worked harder than I ever imagined student-athletes would work and it's been an overwhelming joy to be a part of their growth."

Charlotte will delay its search for a permanent replacement until the conclusion of the 2009 season.
